Bulls Podcast #15

On today’s Chicago Bulls Podcast: Bulls Pick up player contract options on Valentine, Markannen and Dunn, Post Game Wrap-up on the Bulls Vs Denver and a Bulls Roundtable discussion on our current progress after 8 games.
Welcome to the Bulls Podcast, coming to you from BullsPodcast.com. This is where we bring you the latest news, reviews, rants, rumors and opinions on the players, coaches and front office of the Chicago Bulls.
Today we’re joined by friend of the show, Kenyatta Wright from Hypefresh.co and the Bullseye Facebook Group. We’ve featured him as a guest on an earlier earlier episode and it’s our pleasure to bring him back again for another round since the season is well under way. https://www.hypefresh.co/author/kenyatta-wright/

Bulls Pick up player contract options on Valentine, Markannen and Dunn
The Chicago Bulls have exercised the third-year option on Lauri Markkanen, and fourth-year options on guards Kris Dunn and Denzel Valentine. By exercising their options, all players will be under contract with the Bulls for the 2019-20 season.
Post Game reaction to Bulls Vs. Denver Nuggets:
Score: Bulls LOSE 108-107 in OT.

Where are we after 8 Games into the Schedule? Roundtable Discussion
With 8 games in the books and the Bulls having a 2-6 record, we’re officially 10% into the season. With a continuation of this trend, we’re projected to have just 20 wins this season. Right in line with what the Las Vegas experts predicted. We all got mad about that, but as the first sets of games have shown, it’s exactly what they thought it would be despite our own higher expectations as Bulls fans. Are we setting ourselves up for disappointment as the Bulls are tanking? Was this their plan the whole time? Is this just not Fred’s plan and he should be fired? All these questions and more are being thrown on the table for this roundtable discussion.

Bulls Podcast #14

The Chicago Bulls Waive Omer Asik and sign PG Shaquille Harrison, Kris Dunn’s bruised MCL, Zach comes out strong but Questions Bulls Coaching and the Post Game Wrap-up on the Bulls vs. Charlotte.

Bulls Waive Omer Asik, Sign Shaq Harrison
The Bulls have waived health plagued Omer Asik to make room on the roster for more point guards. As it turns out, the Bulls are on the hook for at least $14 million to Asik. We acquired him in the Nikola Mirotic trade, and New Orleans absolutely got the better of that deal, as Niko is playing like an All-Star this year for the Pelicans.
After making salary room, the Bulls have brought in Shaquille Harrison who was waived from Phoenix. So now we have 2 point guards that were on the Phoenix roster last year. (Harrison and Ulis)
Last year Harrison played in 23 games averaging 6.6 PPG, 2.4 assists and 47.6% FG%.

Zach Lavine is every bit the All-Star we thought he would be
Though the Bulls started out 0-3, it’s clear that Zach Lavine is going to be the face of the franchise this year. There’s really only one alpha, and it’s Zach.
Averaging over 30 points throughout his first 4 outings, he matched the starting performance of one other Bull has come out of the gate with 4 30 point games, Michael Jordan.
Zach raised some questions about the coaching calls
“We got to run the right sets out there. We would have run the right plays, got the ball to the right people I think we would have been alright. We were playing free (in the first half) and aggressive. We weren’t coming down and being stagnant. We weren’t calling a lot of plays” Asked how the Bulls are doing at recognizing who has the hot hand, LaVine didn’t hesitate. In fact, he repeated his answer. “I think we have to do better at it,” he said.

Bulls Podcast #13

It’s the Bulls Podcast Episode #13 and we’re talking about the Bulls triming the roster and waive four players, the signing of Point guard Tyler Ulis to a Two-Way Contract, The Bulls fail to sign Bobby Portis to Contract Extension and a preview of the Bulls season opener vs Philadelphia 76ers.
Welcome to the Bulls Podcast, coming to you from BullsPodcast.com. This is where we bring you the latest news, reviews, rants, rumors and opinions on the players, coaches and front office of the Chicago Bulls.
Now on Spotify!

Bulls Waive four players
The Bulls have waived four of the training roster players, Antonius Cleveland, Derrick Walton Jr., Kaiser Gates, and JaKarr Sampson. If all four players clear waivers, then they will become unrestricted free agents.
Sampson, Gates, and Walton signed training camp deals with the Bulls. Cleveland was claimed off waivers by the Bulls in July.
All four players didn’t really get the chance to play in the Bulls five preseason games, and if they did then it was in the last couple of minutes of the game. None of the players that the Bulls released was surprising.
Bulls Sign Tyler Ulis to a Two-Way deal
Ulis, a product of Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, was waived by the Warriors on Friday. He spent two years at Kentucky before getting drafted in the second round by the Phoenix Suns in 2016.
In two years with the Suns, Ulis made 58 starts and played in 132 games. He averaged just over 7 points per game in both seasons. Last season, Ulis also averaged 4.4 assists per game against 1.8 turnovers in 23.4 minutes per game.
The Suns waived Ulis after the season and the Warriors signed him for the preseason. He averaged 3 points and 1.5 assists per game in four preseason games with the Warriors.
The two-way contract means Ulis could be spending more time with the Windy City Bulls than at the United Center on game days, but backup point guard is a question mark for the Bulls. Cam Payne looks like he will get first crack at the role behind Kris Dunn with Denzel Valentine injured. Ryan Arcidiacono just made the team and could also figure into point guard minutes.
The two-way deal means that under his current contract, he can only play in 45 NBA games this season.

Bobby Portis Contract
Bobby Portis doesn’t agree to contract extension, but says staying with Bulls beyond this season is in his ‘DNA’ “Normally, that’s how it goes,’’ Portis said. “But with me, I couldn’t see myself in any other jersey. Obviously, I got Bulls DNA. Me and the city have a love connection somewhere. At the same time, I just enjoy playing for the Bulls. Hopefully in the spring, things can work out.’’
We’ve seen this kind of “Betting on Myself” strategy with Jimmy Butler and even Nikola Mirotic in the past, so let’s hope Bobby has a breakout year and gets the Bulls to the playoffs and beyond this year. Only then will he truly deserve a huge payday. If the Bulls have just another mediocre lottery year,

Passing of Tex Winter
Tex Winter, long time assistant coach of the Bulls and Lakers passed away today at age 96.

The following statement is from John Paxson, the Chicago Bulls Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, on behalf of the Bulls:
“Tex Winter was a basketball legend and perhaps the finest fundamental teacher in the history of our game.  He was an innovator who had high standards for how basketball should be played and approached every day. Those of us who were lucky enough to play for him will always respect his devotion to the game of basketball.  His contributions to the Bulls organization will always be remembered.”
We want to thank new friend of the show, Swaggy Brice. It’s been a pleasure having Brice in this episode and we look forward to having him back on the show during the regular season. You can find his channel on Youtube at SwaggyBrice and the same on social, @swaggybrice.

Bulls Podcast #11

We’ve got a lot in store for you this episode. Including Lauri Markannen and Denzel Valentine Injuries, Bulls First Pre-Season Recap, Player Evaluations After Game 1 and share listener reactions from the Bulls Fan hotline!
Welcome to the Bulls Podcast, coming to you from BullsPodcast.com. This is where we bring you the latest news, reviews, rants, rumors and opinions on the players, coaches and front office of the Chicago Bulls.
We’d like to welcome this week’s special guest, Diana Harris. She’s the host of the DemBulls YouTube channel and has been covering a lot of the action during the offseason leading into training camp and the first game. She’s a very supportive Chicago Bulls fan and we wanted to feature her on the show to expose her to our audience and bring some attention to her YouTube channel, which you should absolutely be subscribing to. Welcome to the show Diana!
Early Season Injuries hit the Bulls
Lauri will be out from 6-8 weeks with an elbow strain. He suffered the injury fighting for a rebound in training camp. It isn’t the start we were all hoping for, but it could be a blessing in disguise, giving our rookies a chance to get some experience in pre-season where it’s an extension of what they are learning in training camp.
Denzel Valentine is out with an ankle sprain. He should be back practicing with the team in a few weeks. Antonio Blakeney will rotate in his spot for the time being, and looked solid in that role.
It’s kind of a bummer with the injuries happening so early. Hopefully it’s not the kind of injury that will sideline Lauri or hamper his playing time when he comes back. He is restricted in his movement with a huge elbow brace, which prevents him from shooting, lifting or working out.

Bulls Beat the New Orleans Pelicans 128-116
99 Field Goal Attempts! Fred said he wanted to put up 100 attempts per game and they got really close to that obscene shooting goal. Pace and Space basketball is here, and it’s pretty awesome to see it being executed.
As a whole the defense looked really good. They had very solid traps with great defensive rotation to the wide open shooters after participating in a trap/double, I feel based on last night’s game, we definitely looked like a better defensive team. We also looked a LOT faster, attacked the basket more than just hoisting up last second bail-out jumpers. There was a point in the game where we had only made two three-pointers, but we were up by a big point margin.
We didn’t get to see the Portis/Mirotic match-up we were hoping for, as Niko didn’t play, but we’ll get our chance during the season for sure.
Marcus watched the game 3 times, each time focusing on Guards, Wings and Center spots. I have a feeling that I’ll be doing this for every game during the season. It’s a fun transition to make from just a normal fan to doing a podcast about the Bulls.

BULLS MEDIA DAY
Gar/Pax
Media day began with John Paxson giving an assessment of the summer and the season to come. “I said earlier this summer after we went to the draft and through free agency that we were pleased in terms of where we are in the rebuild,” said Bulls Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations John Paxson. “With that said, we also understand that we have a lot of work to do. There is an excitement with the group. (But) you’re not going to hear us talk about wins or anything like that; the expectations for us are to see this team come together. Our goal is to be the best basketball team we can be, and that’s through this group coming together. We have talent, I believe that, and how it comes together, how we play, will determine what kind of win total we end up with, but we’re not going to focus on that.’
When asked about the Jimmy Butler / Minnesota debacle, John Paxson politely said it was not their concern. They are concerned about the Bulls, not the Timberwolves drama. When pressed on the issue, they weren’t about to take the bait, even when they are very close to claiming a major victory with the deal.
“It’s never about vindication,” said Paxson when asked about the Butler trade. “We did exactly what we thought was the right thing for the organization last year to rebuild. We walked out that night and we were comfortable then and we’re comfortable now.”
The Bobby Portis contract extension is active in talks with Bobby’s agent and they hope to get it wrapped up soon. This is great news for Bulls fans if the deal can get done. According to general manager Gar Forman, the Bulls and Portis’ representatives are working on an extension as he moves off his rookie contract.
Gar Forman on the Bobby Portis contract situation: ‘‘We’ll continue those conversations up until the deadline,’’ Forman said. ‘‘We value Bobby. We look at Bobby as part of our core. He has continued to improve each year. All of us up here love the energy he plays with, the work ethic he has, what he brings to the practice floor and game floor. That’s why we’ve been having conversations.’’
Coach Fred Hoiberg
Fred was relieved that they were 2 deep in every player position and that training camp would be “ultra competitive” for every starting spot on the roster. “Every position is open at this point”
Coach Hoiberg admitted his players already are starting to get tired of hearing about how suspect they are defensively. ‘‘I think that you certainly hear it,’’ Hoiberg said. ‘‘It’s hard in this era when things are said to not hear it.

More trades to think about with the ESPN Trade Machine

The Story of the day: Jimmy Butler apparently wants out of Minnesota, immediately elevating Gar Forman and John Paxson to Genius Level Status!
Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Jimmy Butler has reportedly requested a trade ahead of the 2018-19 NBA season.
On Wednesday, Shams Charania and Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic reported Butler has provided the T-Wolves with a list of the “one to three teams” with whom he’d be willing to sign a contract extension.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Butler’s three preferred trade destinations are the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks.
In July, Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times reported Butler was “frustrated with the nonchalant attitudes of younger teammates—specifically Karl-Anthony Towns—[and] does not intend to sign an extension with the Timberwolves.”
Per Cowley, the four-time All-Star selection is also keen on linking up with Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving next offseason—both players can decline player options in their contract to become free agents in 2019—to create a potential superteam in the Eastern Conference.
Krawczynski noted Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau was “initially resistant” to the idea of a trade, but Butler remains hopeful of moving to a new team as the new season approaches.
Krawczynski also reported the request has “very little” to do with the reported issues with Towns and Andrew Wiggins and is more related to contract concerns.
Butler is scheduled to receive a $18.7 million base salary for the 2018-19 season, which ranks 12th among shooting guards, seven spots behind Wiggins, per Spotrac.
It’s unclear whether there’s enough time to complete a major trade before the campaign gets underway in less than a month. The Wolves are set to open the preseason against the Golden State Warriors on Sept. 29, and their regular season begins Oct. 17 when they take on the San Antonio Spurs.
State of the Bulls Fan, Part 2
There’s something going on within the Bulls fan base this offseason. It’s a cloud of negativity that festers like an open wound. Some of you may have even seen the brief Twitter flame war I had with Jordan Maly of Locked On Bulls this week. It’s the fact that Bulls fans think our defense will be the absolute worst in the league and we will never make the playoffs and not win 40 games this year.
It wasn’t too long ago that we had a group of complete scrubs for a Bulls lineup,

I’m not a post-up player. I’m fast, a more athletic guy. I got back down to the weight I need to be at [185 pounds], but still I feel strong. I feel really good, man. I’m excited for the season….

Who leads the team for NBA award considerations this year?
Reading Hoops Habit’s Latest projections, they indicate who on the Bulls would be most likely to receive one of the coveted NBA awards. This is very early in the season, but let’s explore who would be in consideration for the various awards if the circumstances were right.
https://hoopshabit.com/2018/09/02/chicago-bulls-best-candidates-for-2018-19-nba-awards/
Rookie of The Year: Wendell Carter Jr.
The Bulls’ best rookie is clearly Carter, but the chances of him winning the Rookie of the Year award are probably not all that great as he may be coming off the bench for a good portion of the season.
Most Improved Player: Zach LaVine, Jabari Parker
There a few players on the Bulls’ roster who could qualify for the MIP on the team. Kris Dunn took a huge step following an underwhelming rookie season in the Twin Cities. Bobby Portis turned in a pretty solid season (more on that in a bit). Lauri Markkanen, put together a solid rookie season as well and proved that he is more than just a shooter.
As impressive as this trio was, the two players that will be discussed are Zach LaVine and Jabari Parker. LaVine played in just 24 games last season following an ACL injury that kept on the shelf for nearly a year.
While both players have proven to be respectable scorers, neither of them is known for playing defense at a halfway decent level. If either of them shows noticeable improvement in this area next season, they would have to be the favorite to win the award as far as this Bulls roster is concerned.
Sixth Man of the Year: Bobby Portis
Bobby Portis’ 2017-18 season didn’t exactly begin on the highest of notes. In fact, he got into an altercation with former teammate Nikola Mirotic. The result was Mirotic missed 23 games with a concussion and multiple facial fractures while Portis was handed an eight-game suspension.
This incident could have been the beginning of the end for Portis, but he bounced back nicely, to say the least. He posted career highs in nearly every statistical category, and he extended his perimeter game to the 3-point line, knocking down 35.9 percent of his attempts.
In light of being one of the most consistent performers off the bench last season, it should come as no surprise that Portis would get the most consideration of any player on the roster. In addition to that, Portis was only one of three players to post 21 points, 10 rebounds and 1.5 3-pointers per contest on a 36-minute scale.
The other two players were Kevin Durant and DeMarcus Cousins.
Last season’s winner, Lou Williams, put up 22.6 points and 5.3 assists per contest in 60 appearances off the bench for the Los Angeles Clippers. Needless to say, those numbers are a bit beyond Portis’ range for the time being.
Even though he won’t win the league award, he should receive more consideration than he did a year ago.

Defensive Player of the Year: Kris Dunn
After being taken with the No. 5 overall pick two years ago, Dunn didn’t have a season to remember during his rookie campaign with the Minnesota Timberwolves. His averages of 3.8 points, 2.4 assists and 2.

New NBA Rule Changes Proposed

14 Second clock following an offensive rebound (rather than 24 sec reset). This will supposedly speed up the game, but will it really?

Another rule change being considered is simplifying the clear-path foul, which currently lists five bullet points, including when the ball and an offensive player are positioned between the tip-off circle extended and the basket, when there is no defender between the ball and the basket and when the foul denied an offensive team a chance to score.

The hostile-act rule being considered is when one player “intentionally or recklessly harms or attempts to harm” another player by attempting to punch, kick, elbow or hit the opponent in the head. Officials determine if the offending player is assessed a Flagrant-1 or 2 foul that can lead to ejection from a game and/or suspension.

Zach Lavine on bleacher report article as one of the most overhyped players. Seafood restaurants agree.

The Chicago Bulls are in a strange place. We’re entering the second year of the rebuild and that means expectations are all over the board. Some people expect them to be even worse this year and some people think they can make a run at the playoffs.

While team expectations remain scattered, the individual expectations are a bit more solid when it comes to the Bulls.

Wendell Carter Jr has instilled confidence in the fans, as has Lauri Markkanen. But what has us all scratching our heads is the expectations for Zach Lavine. Coming in this summer with a new 4 year 78 million dollar deal, the Bulls have thrown half their chip stack on red, and the wheel is still in mid-spin as far as the fans are concerned. Is he over-hyped coming into this season?

Bleacher report recently stated: “The real problem is that even if LaVine reaches his apex as an offensive weapon, there’s little reason to believe he’ll be a net-positive player. That’s because he’s one of the worst defenders in the NBA. According to Basketball Reference, he’s never posted a defensive box plus-minus in positive territory.

Wendell Carter voted by NBA Rookies to have the Best Career among all 2018 draft picks
In the league’s annual rookie survey, via John Schuhmann of NBA.com, Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton (#1 pick) and Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Collin Sexton (#8 pick) were picked to be co-Rookies of the Year. They each received 18 percent of the votes, respectively.
The Bulls may have missed out on players like top pick DeAndre Ayton or foreign sensation Luka Doncic, but the other rookies of the NBA feel like Wendell Carter Jr. may have the most potential of them all. It’s clear that the newest players in the NBA see the potential in Carter. This is just confirmation of what we’ve already seen from WCJ during the summer. It’s important to take these results with a grain of salt. Since the survey was first conducted back in 2007, rookies have correctly predicted the Rookie of the Year winner just once in nine attempts: Kevin Durant in 2007. But it’s still great news for Bulls Fans long-term as we focus on the rebuilding of the Bulls core players. It’s nice to see that WCJ is getting the recognition and respect from his draft classmates going forward.
Bulls Schedule
The Bulls schedule is out and we’ve been hard at work analyzing the calendar and circling the dates of our favorite matchups. For this segment, we’ll highlight a few of those games and let you know what we’re looking for in each matchup.
Marcus Picks:
Oct. 18, 2018: Opening night against Philadelphia 76ers
Naturally, this is going to be the litmus test for the long season to come. How will the Bulls stack up to one of the East’s current powerhouses? As the season opener, Bulls’ fans optimism and excitement for the new season should be at a peak. The long offseason full of speculation on how this young squad will play and develop together will finally be over. Bulls fans will finally get a taste of meaningful basketball for the first time in months.
Oct. 29, 2018: Dubs in the UC
Despite the fact this matchup is taking place very early in the season, the new-look Bulls are hoping to hold their own against the defending champs, even if a victory proves to be a momentary speed bump on the Warriors’ march towards another championship.
BULLS vs SUNS – Nov 21, 2018 (Wyse)
BULLS vs BUCKS – Nov 28,2018 (Wyse)
BULLS vs KINGS – Dec 10,2018  (Wyse)
Dec. 26, 2018: Bulls vs. Minnesota Timberwolves
Last year’s matchup between these two teams featured an epic battle between Zach LaVine and Jimmy Butler. Although Butler won the statistical battle, the Bulls overcame a 17-point deficit thanks to LaVine’s 15 points in the 4th quarter for the late win. What will Round 2 bring us in this post-Christmas match-up? How will the Jabari Parker vs Jimmy Butler matchup play out? What about Wendell Carter Jr vs Karl Anthony Towns? This is going to be a holiday season game to remember for the whole season.
